Physical Exam &

Video Otoscope

An external and internal ear exam with video technology.

Your hearing care specialists will conduct a physical ear exam before using a video Otoscope to view the inside of your ear.

A Video Otoscope helps us to clearly see the ear canal and eardrum. It is used to detect and diagnose conditions that affect the ear, such as inflammation, ear wax, or discharge.

Tympanometry

A Tympanometry exam uses a probe inside the ear to create variations of air pressure in the ear canal. These air pressure variations can measure the condition of the middle ear.

Equal pressure on both sides of the eardrum shows that sound can pass through normally.

Humming and light pressure can indicate abnormal results.

Air Conduction

An Air Conduction test takes place in a sound booth or other quiet room. State-of-the-art Insert Earphones are used to transmit sound vibrations into your ear through air.  When you hear a sound, you will be asked to use a signal such as raising your hand, saying 'yes,' or pressing a button.

This test helps identify hearing loss in the outer, middle, and inner ear using natural sound waves.

Bone Conduction

A Bone Conduction test takes place in a sound booth or other quiet room. Using a headband with a small, square electromechanical earphone, sound vibrations are transmitted through the bones in your head. When you hear a sound, you will be asked to use a signal such as raising your hand, saying 'yes,' or pressing a button.

A bone conduction test will help your hearing care specialists determine if your hearing loss is located in your inner, middle, or outer ear.

Speech Testing

Speech testing includes Speech Recognition Threshold, Most Comfortable Level, Uncomfortable Level, Word Discrimination, and Speech in Noise.

A Speech Recognition Threshold (SRT) test measures your ability to recognize words at different levels of sound. The volume of the words will lower, or increase based on your response.

The Most Comfortable Listening Level testing measures what sound level is the one you prefer for enjoying music or watching television.

The Most Uncomfortable Listening Level test starts at your most comfortable level of sound and increases until it reaches an uncomfortably loud level of sound.

The Word Recognition test consists of fifty-one syllable words (such as Hand or Cat) said to you at your most comfortable listening level. You will repeat each word you hear.

Speech in Noise (Quick SIN) is a test designed to establish a person's speech to noise ratio hearing loss. That is what you want to hear vs any noise that is interfering with the sound.

What does a Hearing Test tell us?

Your comprehensive Hearing Test will help us detect any issues you may have with your hearing.

This can include anything from an obstruction due to earwax to permanent hearing damage. The tests we administer will produce an Audiogram, as shown here.

An Audiogram will tell us what degree of hearing loss you may have. It can accurately detect if you have even mild hearing loss and increase in severity up to profound hearing problems.

Your hearing test will be reviewed with you by one of our hearing care specialists and determine whether a hearing aid will help you hear more clearly.
